Will Pewter Ring Turn My Finger Green

Journalists do not shut the country's future uncertain as university students

by Lorec B. Miranda Algarin

University students from various academic institutions in Puerto Rico presented their views and mood of the country's immediate future.

E s obvious economic crisis facing Puerto Rico. Thousands of people have lost their jobs in less than 11 months, which today are not sure how take home a living. This also applies to university students, who are the future of our country working class. What about your studies, get jobs upon graduation or will have to explore new possibilities in other countries? This uncertainty is invading the university sector, where four young people are expressing their spokesman, and we feel as a result of this situation.

Luis A. Vera Torres (20 years), student of Accounting at the University of Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras is outraged with the government. According to him, they have abandoned the principles that made form, which is to ensure the interests of a people aspiring to a better quality of life, a future of peace and harmony for children, youth, adults and seniors. "Currently, what future can we have? The government has no plan for our country, have not focused on seeking to improve our situation in the short term. Most plans seek a long term solution, but I wonder: how long can it be? If you look good, could be more than 10 years and that's not what we want our young students at this time. Therefore, an immediate future in Puerto Rico do not see clear. " Concern invades the daily lives of Louis and he does not know if they meet their goals of study because the country's immediate future is not being watched or studied by any government. "My feeling as a young man's anguish, and above all desperation. Still, Puerto Rico is a country of great faith and hope. I think that even today we are bad we can improve. " An uncertain future would be the right word to define the feelings of this young man.

The situation is similar to Joshua E. Velasco Flores (20 years), student of Accounting at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo. Recognizes that Puerto Rico is undergoing a lamentable crisis. So, think that working for yourself, not by legislators, nor by power, because they do not care about citizens. If the immediate future is now, today, we must unite as a people and forget about the colors and the parties to achieve an immediate solution. Fight for the rights of Puerto Ricans was something stressed again and again. Having the same vision and stop thinking about the past administrations and blame someone. "Personally I was concerned, I have my job, but I am only costing the university and it is difficult, because I have lowered the hours due to the economic situation in the country. Despite that I'm focused on what I want. Sometimes I feel that there is no immediate future as you say. And I wonder: What will I study? But then I do not want to stay stagnant. Right now I have the urge to study and work for me and my people. "

The College Student Film, and Television Arts in Guaynabo, Olga Santiago Mendez (21), is worried that was not soon fix the economic crisis in the country. "My future was uncertain. I graduate in May and when I went solo all costs would be higher, homes, cars, food ... in short all the basic needs you have. This adding that no one get a job after being prepared. I do not know if I have to go to another country to work. I do not know. " But, he said that previously have been similar situations in the country and have been covered, want to think that this is temporary. What also will be resolved.

"The situation is the country is like a wound, rather than cure, the scrape," said Samuel E. Fuster Martinez (26 years), graduate student in Industrial Management and Marketing graduate of the University of Puerto Rico at Rio Piedras. By being very safe, forecast that the country will not improve by at least 4 years from now. Y that 2010 and 2011 will be most difficult years we are living now. "All markets will continue to increase. So prices will continue to increase, and earning power will decrease along with the value of the dollar. The crisis in education, health, economy, everything, is inevitable. This has dragged on for 20 years by fascist mentality in power, and is now reflected. In the news all you see in the leadership are people who are disrespectful and do not think collectively, in the village, but in them. " Like other young Samuel feels great uncertainty. "Now I worry about all the changes since I have many responsibilities and rely on my work to support me. In my work cut budget and staff. It was a tense moment for me because I always think the worst one that you will come to you. " Mentioned that there is a situation to "go crazy", you should only cut costs, find the help they need and have the confidence that everything will happen soon.
